Permit Requirements for Interstate Trucking Through New Mexico
Interstate trucking through New Mexico involves more than just federal authority and IFTA filings
1. Weight-Distance Tax & Permit
If your commercial vehicle travels through New Mexico and has a declared gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds, you must register for and pay the New Mexico Weight-Distance Tax and obtain an associated Weight-Distance Permit. This applies to both intrastate and interstate operations.
This tax is based on miles traveled in New Mexico and declared weight.
Annual registration and quarterly tax filings are required at https://www.newmexicotruckingonline.com/.
2. Oversize/Overweight Permits Required Before Entry
Under New Mexico Administrative Code 18.19.8.20 NMAC, any oversize or overweight vehicle, load, or combination must have a special permit issued by the New Mexico DOT before entering the state.
This means you cannot enter the state with an oversize/overweight load unless the permit — and any required certified escort vehicles — are already in place.
3. Size and Weight Limits & Permits
New Mexico sets standard legal limits for commercial vehicles. If your truck exceeds these limits, a permit is required for interstate transit:
Common legal thresholds without a permit:
Width: 8′6″
Height: 14′
Length: 57′6″ (65′ on some roads)
Weight: 80,000 lbs GVW
If your vehicle or load exceeds any of these: An oversize/overweight permit must be obtained before entering the state.
Permits are route-specific and specify allowed roads and conditions.
